26 Face Court on Charges of Attack on Police in Foshan

According to the Southern Metropolis Daily, the People's Court of Shunde district, in the city of Foshan, yesterday began court proceeding against 26 people for their role in a violent attack on policemen in Chen village (陈村) that took place on Jul 23. The 26 defendants are accused of crimes including interferring with the provision of public service, arson and the disturbance of business operations. On Jul 23, following their attempts to arrest an individual involved in a land dispute, three policemen were tied to a turned-over police car and had petrol splashed on them by the villagers before having molotov cocktails thrown towards them.

Aside from the three policemen who were tied to the car, another three public security officers also suffered minor injuries as a result of the confrontation.

The police were attacked after they attempted to intervene in a land dispute between villagers.

Given the complexity of the case and the number of accused, no sentence has yet been announced.
