Yesterday afternoon an American businessman was stabbed by a 61-year-old Chinese man in central Beijing.
According to a report in today's Beijing Daily, police were called to the Qianmen area, directly south of Tian'anmen Square, at 3.40pm after a foreigner was stabbed.
Police detained a suspect close to the scene at 4.45pm.
According to the Beijing Times, the suspect's name is Wang Taicun (王太存), from Xintai (新泰), a city in the neigbouring coastal province of Shandong.
The paper reported that Wang, who is petitioner, stabbed the American man in order to draw attention to his complaints.
The wounded American, who was reported to be a businessman, was sent to hospital for treatment.
Earlier this month in an unrelated case, a 50-year-old man named Zhang Jianfei (张健飞) was sentenced to death by a Beijing court for killing two and injuring 14 others during a drunken stabbing spree in the Qianmen area in September 2009.
During the Beijing Olympics in 2008, an American couple were stabbed by a man at the historic Drum Tower, which is also located on Beijing's central axis. After killing Minneapolis businessman Todd Bachman, the father-in-law of the U.S. men's indoor-volleyball coach, and seriously injured his wife Barbara, the assailant leapt to his death from the tower.
