More than a year after 13 Chinese crew members were murdered aboard two cargo boats in the volatile Golden Triangle region, 6 people have been sentenced for their involvement in the crime.
The Yunnan Kunming Intermediate court yesterday sentenced Naw Kham (糯康) and three other men to death for their role in organizing and carrying out the brutal murders.
Two other accused received a suspended death sentence and an eight year prison term.
All six of the men have lodged an appeal.
Naw Kham was found guilty of murder, drug running, kidnapping and hijacking a ship.
The six men were also ordered to pay a combined 6 million yuan in compensation.
At a news conference convened after the verdict was handed down, Zhou Andong, a judge from the criminal tribunal of the court, said "It's the first time foreign suspects who committed crimes against Chinese nationals outside China have been brought to China to stand trial, and will face the death sentence."
Turning to Thailand
According to an investigative report produced by the court, Naw Kham and his men are said to have colluded with Thai soldiers in the attack on the Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8, on Oct 5,2011.
Chinese officials will now press Thailand to push ahead with prosecuting nine Thai soldiers who are suspected of being involved in the attack and will hand over related evidence to the Thai authorities.
