Beijing Municipality yesterday began work on a project of "urban renewal" at Tangjialing, a suburb of Beijing that recently gained a lot of attention because it was home to many members of China's so-called "ant tribe", a moniker given to recent university graduates, often from the interior of China, who endure low pay, long commutes and poor conditions in the country's larger cities. The plan involves demolishing illegal structures and the construction of subsidized public apartments for local villagers as well as public rental apartments for other low-income earners.
