Outbreak of 139,000 Cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in the First Quarter

In the first quarter of this year, there has been an outbreak of 139,000 cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease in China; almost 10,000 cases more than the first quarter of last year. Most of the cases have occurred in the outskirts of urban areas where, according to Wang Quanyi, director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Local Infectious Disease Control Department, children are suffering from unclean and unhealthy living conditions as well as from an inadequate supply of nutrition.
